Creighton hosts 19th annual Trauma Symposium, June 14

Creighton University will again host some of the nation’s top trauma surgeons this June for a look at how trauma surgical care in both military and civilian arenas of welfare continues to evolve.

June 14, the 19th Annual Creighton Trauma Symposium will welcome as its keynote speaker J. Wayne Meredith, MD, chair of surgery and director of surgical sciences at Wake Forest University and founding executive director of the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma. Meredith’s address is titled “Lessons Learned on the Way to the Operating Room.”

“We very much look forward, to welcoming Dr. Meredith and hearing the lessons he has to impart from a life-long career in saving lives and advancing the study and practice of Trauma Surgery as well as the rest of our nationally renowned faculty,” said Juan A. Asensio, MD, chief of the Division of Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care and a professor in the Creighton School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery. “The symposium again promises to be a superb and an important educational experience for everyone across the spectrum of trauma surgery and surgical critical care.”

In addition to the keynote address, sessions will also focus on treatment of intraperitoneal colon injuries, angiography and angioembolization as a valuable adjunct in the management of traumatic injuries, the use of whole blood from recent U.S. military experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, trauma in the elderly and global perspectives on trauma surgical care.

Asensio will also deliver a talk titled, “Vietnam, Our Most Painful War: Its Contributions to Vascular Injury Management.”

An entire session on the history, evolution and future of emergency medical services’ use of helicopters as means of evacuation will round out the symposium.

“This promises to be innovative and highly educational experience, all around,” Asensio said.

The symposium reaches across an array of medical professions to educate trauma surgeons, surgeons in all specialties, emergency medicine specialists, physicians, nurses, emergency management technicians, pharmacists, physicians’ assistants, public health professionals and researchers.

The symposium begins with a 7 a.m. registration and continental breakfast, and should conclude around 4 p.m.
