Chair named for new Department of Humanities at Creighton University School of Medicine

Kevin Fitzgerald, SJCreighton University announced today The Rev. Kevin T. FitzGerald, SJ, PhD, will serve as the inaugural chair of the newly formed Department of Medical Humanities in the School of Medicine.

FitzGerald is the John A. Creighton University Professor, and an associate professor in the School of Medicine, Department of Medical Education, at Creighton. He received a PhD in molecular genetics and a PhD in bioethics from Georgetown University. His research efforts focus on the utilization of reflection in medical education, the investigation of abnormal gene expression in cancer, and on ethical issues in biomedical research and medical genomics.

The Department of Medical Humanities will support the mission-driven formation of medical students and other students in the various education and training programs of our school.

“Fr. FitzGerald will be a strong leader to help the department develop a strategic plan to identify other opportunities for education in the medical humanities,” said Bo Dunlay, MD, dean of the School of Medicine. “Department faculty will also actively collaborate with colleagues across Creighton as part of our university-wide ‘Leading with the Liberal Arts’ tradition. The values-driven professional formation and the balanced training perspective that we offer is what makes a Creighton physician unique.”

FitzGerald is a founding member of Do No Harm, a member of the ethics committee for the March of Dimes, and a member of the Genetic Alliance IRB. In addition, he currently chairs the Ethics Advisory Council for the Geisinger Health System MyCode biobank project. In addition, Fr. FitzGerald has been a corresponding member of the Pontifical Academy for Life since 2005, and a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Culture since 2014.

Some of the electives that will be offered to medical students include, Death, Health and Dickens; Creative Writing Workshop for Future Physicians; Is Race Real? Racialization in Medicine and Science; Childbirth and Social Justice and Physician’s Vocation Program Year 1: Introduction to Ignatian Spirituality in Medicine.
