Planetary Emergency Lecture Series features expert on nonviolent social mobilization

Hardy MerrimanIn light of the Green New Deal resolution being debated in Washington and recent student strikes for the climate around the nation and world, the second installment of Creighton University’s Planetary Emergency Lecture Series is coming at a perfect moment.

Monday, April 1, the University welcomes Hardy Merriman, president of the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC) and an internationally recognized expert in civil resistance. Focusing on effective, rapid and nonviolent mobilization and resistance, Merriman will discuss strategies for moving the U.S. population on climate change.

“Drawing upon lessons from other nonviolent movements that have advanced rights, freedom, and justice, Hardy Merriman will help us think through how activism and citizen mobilization can play a critical role in addressing the climate crisis today,” said Richard Miller, PhD, professor of systematic theology and sustainability studies. “While this lecture focuses on mobilization to avoid a hothouse earth, his analysis of the structures of power is relevant to the multiple movements for justice that are springing forth in our society today.”

Merriman is the author of A Guide to Effective Nonviolent Struggle and is a lecturer at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. His talk at Creighton is titled “We’re the Ones We’ve Been Waiting For: Power, Social Movements, and Lessons Learned for Climate Organizing.”

His lecture will take place at 7 p.m. on April 1 in the Hixson-Lied Auditorium at the Harper Center, 602 N. 20th St., on the Creighton campus. A post-lecture conversation will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

These events are free and open to the public. The Planetary Emergency Lecture Series is sponsored by the Creighton Global Initiative.
