Impact of Shanghai Cooperation Organization on U.S. in Central Asia topic of lecture

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) which counts China and Russia as core members, is emerging as a major threat to the USís dominance in Central Asia. NATO is preparing how to shape the new and different geopolitical map in that area.

On Thursday Nov. 21, Leo Florick, Col. USAF Ret., will discuss this and how economically, the SCOís influence through Chinaís Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) will pose a direct threat to NATO and US interests in that vast area, during a public lecture from 6:00 Ė 7:30 p.m., in room 3028 of the Harper Center on the Creighton campus.

An Asian style dinner begins at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Florick served in the United States Air Force and the Department of Defense for more than 40 years. Following the Soviet Unionís collapse and dissolvement, Florick played an important role in negotiating the Dayton Accords, the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty, the START follow-on agreements and other documents with the former Warsaw Pact and Soviet states. After retiring from the Air Force in 2001, he continued to work for the Department of Defense at the United States Strategic Command located at Offutt AFB. During that time, he was responsible for regular engagements with the Peopleís Liberation Army and other Chinese officials, served as a managerial lead for engagements with the U.S. academic community, and functioned as the primary lead for planning and thinking through conflict escalation.
