Todero Named Vice Provost of Health Sciences Campuses at Creighton

Catherine ToderoCatherine Todero, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and dean of the College of Nursing, has been named vice provost of Health Sciences Campuses for Creighton University, effective Nov. 15. In addition to her new responsibilities, she will continue to serve as dean of the College of Nursing.

In her new role, Todero will exercise general executive responsibility for the broad educational, clinical, and community engagement programs of Creighton’s health sciences colleges and schools. Based in Omaha, she will provide leadership, oversight and stewardship to all aspects of the University’s health sciences academic programs and facilities at both the Phoenix and Omaha campuses.

The Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, president of Creighton University, welcomed Todero to her new responsibilities. “We look forward to her leadership in continuing to advance Creighton University’s excellence in health sciences education both here in Omaha and in Phoenix,” he said.

Todero said she looks forward to helping Creighton fulfill its multi-campus health education “dream.”

“Establishing a new branch campus for health sciences has allowed Creighton an opportunity to dream about our preferred future for educating health care professionals,” she said. “We are examining our educational, clinical and support processes, across both our Omaha and Phoenix campuses, and determining the most innovative, effective and collaborative approaches.

“I am pleased to bring my past multi-campus experiences to this endeavor as vice provost of Health Sciences Campuses.”

Todero, who earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Creighton in 1972, has served as dean of the Creighton College of Nursing since 2015. She had previously served as associate dean and director of Azusa Pacific University School of Nursing, San Diego Regional Center. She has been instrumental in developing the Creighton University Health Sciences – Phoenix Campus. As part of Creighton’s strategic planning efforts, Todero served as a goal steward for the Phoenix health sciences campus initiative. Todero also led the establishment of the College of Nursing’s accelerated BSN degree program in Phoenix, and served as program lead in planning for the new $100 million, 180,000-square-foot building at Park Central in midtown Phoenix.

Expected to be completed by 2021, the Phoenix campus will include a four-year satellite medical school and is expected eventually to serve nearly 900 Creighton students studying to be physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, physical therapists, and occupational therapists.

In addition to her work on the Phoenix campus, Todero has been actively involved in the leadership of Creighton’s Center for Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research and in interprofessional education discussions around the planning of an interprofessional educational facility that Creighton plans for its Omaha campus.

As vice provost, Todero will serve as the senior administrative Creighton University leader in Phoenix; oversee accreditation for the various academic programs; and establish and develop relationships with community and civic leaders, academic institutions, health system partners, local governing bodies and philanthropic organizations. Additionally, she will collaborate with other Creighton divisions to coordinate student recruitment, admission, retention, learning management systems, library resources and student support services on both campuses.

As the senior health sciences leader, Todero will chair a Creighton University Health Science Governing Council that will include the Omaha health sciences deans and Phoenix associate deans; assist in the development and coordination of academic programs on the two campuses; and join leadership on Creighton’s President’s Cabinet, the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance and the affiliation council with CHI Health.
