Empty Bowls event at Creighton University to raise funds for homeless shelter

Empty BowlsIt’s true that art often imitates life. But sometimes it does so much more.

In December, Creighton University’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts will host its Empty Bowls fundraiser in support of Omaha’s Siena/Francis House. The event will be from 4-8 p.m. Dec. 4 and 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Lied Education Center for the Arts, 24th and Cass streets.

At the event, guests will be invited to purchase one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic bowls (most in the $5-$10 range) created by Creighton students, faculty, staff and volunteers. All proceeds will be donated to the Siena/Francis House, an emergency overnight shelter for people experiencing homelessness.

Those who purchase pieces will receive a complimentary bowl of soup donated by the University’s Division of Student Life and Creighton Dining.

This year marks the eighth time that Amy Nelson, MFA, associate professor in Creighton’s College of Arts and Sciences, has organized the Empty Bowls fundraiser. Since 2008, the event has raised more than $45,000 for the Siena/Francis House.

“The level of student commitment to the project has been astounding,” Nelson says. “It still amazes me how effortlessly and enthusiastically Creighton students dedicate their time and creative energy to something they are giving away. I believe that much of this dedication comes from the fact students have already contributed to the Siena/Francis House’s mission in other ways.”

The project, part of a national program of the same name, is a product of the Arts and Civic Engagement service learning course, offered through the College of Arts and Sciences in partnership with the Siena/Francis House. Students enrolled in the course work inside and outside the classroom, learning the value of labor and its application to real-world situations.
