Creighton Names New Director of Sustainability

Nicholas McCrearyNicholas McCreary has been named Creighton University’s director of sustainability, and will join the University on March 16.

As director of sustainability at Creighton, McCreary will work to develop a campus-wide sustainability strategic plan as part of the Global Engagement Office team.

“He will be an important leader in the continued transformation of our global engagement that cares for our common home,” says René Padilla, PhD, vice provost for global engagement.

McCreary has served as the sustainability coordinator at Indiana State University, Terre Haute, since 2017. During his tenure at ISU, he led a multi-disciplinary committee of faculty, staff and students to create the campus sustainability plan.

At ISU, McCreary also developed the sustainability fellows program for students. Student fellows in this program developed and implemented sustainability programs on campus, including a residence hall food-waste program, a learning community and campus celebrations. Under McCreary’s leadership students started a reuse store, where items collected during residence hall move-out were sold to divert waste.

McCreary has conducted research on how sustainability science can transition social-ecological systems toward sustainability. Most recently, he spearheaded a Sustainable Cities initiative. This initiative partners ISU with the town of Sullivan, Indiana, to produce tangible and relevant sustainability outcomes for the community through service-learning opportunities for faculty, staff and students.

In addition, he has experience converting urban spaces into permaculture food forests, manages the ISU community garden and has taught courses on sustainability.

McCreary earned a Master of Science in Sustainability degree from Saint Louis University and a Bachelor of Arts in Earth Sciences, with minors in political science and philosophy, from DePauw University, in Greencastle, Indiana. McCreary has additionally achieved LEED Green Associate accreditation.
