New Presidential Grants, Research Awards Presented at Convocation

Among the awards and honors distributed Feb. 4 during the 2020 Founders Day Awards Ceremony and Convocation Address were several granted under The President’s Distinguished Curriculum Innovation and Pedagogical Research Grant Award program.

The program aims to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning through curriculum innovation and pedagogical research dedicated to student learning and curriculum enrichment by members of the faculty. Curriculum development and innovation includes new courses, examination of and reflection upon teaching and learning practices, new modes of teaching, activities that improve the quality of instruction, and/or pedagogical research that enhances Creighton’s curriculum.

Grants are given in four categories:

  • Interdisciplinary or Interprofessional Health Education
  • Lifelong Learning Innovation (e.g., graduate level programs, certificate programs, nontraditional students, career enhancement and transition)
  • Community Engagement (e.g., North Omaha place-based learning, population health)
  • Exigent Issues of Global Concern (e.g. racism, refugees, immigration, climate change, interreligious dialogue, political discourse, secularity)

The grants are awarded for one year and are given to individual faculty or an interdisciplinary team.

The 2020 recipients are:

Interdisciplinary or Interprofessional Health Education Award:

  • Mitchel Magrini, PhD, Principal Investigator, for: “Developing and Evaluating the Effectiveness of Incorporating Virtual Interactive Activities to Improve Student Learning in an Undergraduate Human Anatomy Course.” Co-Investigators, Kelley Hammond, PhD; Julie Manz, PhD.
  • Angela Patterson, OTD, OTR/L, Principal Investigator, for: “Global Health Education: Learning Modules Based in Ignatian Pedagogy.” Co-investigators, Cathy Carrico, DNP; Rebecca Davis, DNP; Naser Alsharif, PharmD, PhD; Alex Roedlach, PhD; Jessica Niski, PT, DPT

Lifelong Learning Innovation Award:

  • Jennifer Moss-Breen, PhD, Principal Investigator, for: “Gaming Simulation as a Pedagogical Innovation in an Interdisciplinary Doctoral Leadership Course: Suggested Strategies to Enhance Lifelong Learning.” Co-Investigator, Tim Guetterman, PhD.
  • Leah Georges, PhD, Principal Investigator, for: “Adaptation of Face-to-Face Teaching Strategies for Online Adult Graduate Education.” Co-Investigators, Candace Bloomquist, PhD; Debra Ford, PhD; James Martin, PhD.
  • Gretchen Oltman, JD, PhD, Principal Investigator, for: “Lifelong Learning Sports Leadership: A New Creighton Major.” Co-Investigator, Vicki Bautista, EdD.

Community Engagement Award:

  • Pierce Greenberg, PhD, Solo Investigator, for: “Establishing a Social Science Data Lab: Linking Research, Teaching and Service for the Greater Good.”
  • Palma Strand, JD, Principal Investigator, for: “Organizing for Justice and Solidarity in the 21st Century.” Co-investigator, Jacqueline Font-Guzmán, JD, PhD.

Exigent Issues of Global Concern Award:

  • Adam Sundberg, PhD, Principal Investigator, for: “Global Concern Novel Ecologies: Creative Thinking About Ecological Crises.” Co-Investigators, Lydia Cooper, PhD; Mackenzie Taylor, PhD.

A final category, the University Research Award, was given to two faculty members.

The University Research Award is granted to faculty who have a demonstrated record of nationally and internationally recognized research or creative work; who have engaged in scholarship that provides significant contributions to their profession or discipline; and who have a record of research and publication/creative accomplishment while at Creighton University.

The 2020 winners are:

  • Laura Hansen, PhD, Health Sciences
  • Leonard Greenspoon, PhD, Non-Health Sciences
