Panel of North Omaha natives to discuss what influences shaped their path during MLK event

MLK posterCreighton University’s annual celebration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., will take place Jan. 20 through Jan. 22, featuring performances, recognition, education and food and faith-filled events throughout the week.

"The Drum Major Instinct" is the theme for the 2020 MLK Jr. Celebration, focusing on the mission and hardship, the trials and the triumph that dotted Dr. King’s ministry and life.

A panel discussion around the newly released Omaha World-Herald book, 24th and Glory, by Dirk Chatelain, will be held Monday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. in Harper Center auditorium on the Creighton campus. The event is open to the public.

The panel members will discuss structures that shaped their paths growing up in North Omaha, along with the important individuals who guided them, their views on North Omaha’s civil rights past and present, and their thoughts on how North Omaha can rise to relive its past glory as well as current challenges and opportunities for Omaha’s black community.

The panel participants are Jerry Bartee, retired assistant superintendent for Omaha Public Schools and former principal of Omaha South High School; Brenda Council, former member of the Omaha Public School Board, Omaha City Council and Nebraska Legislature; Michael Green, president and chief investment officer of Evergreen Capital Management, along with two of the book’s featured stars, Johnny Rodgers, Heisman Trophy winner and chair of the board of the 100 Black Men of Omaha and Roger Sayers, retired executive for Union Pacific Railroad.

24th and Glory, The Intersection of Civil Rights and Omaha’s Greatest Generation of Athletes is a book and newspaper series by Omaha World-Herald writer Dirk Chatelain, that chronicles the rise of North Omaha and the generation of athletes it spawned in the 1950s and ’60s, including greats like the late Bob Boozer, Bob Gibson, Gale Sayers, Roger Sayers, Johnny Rodgers, Ron Boone and Marlin Briscoe.

Copies of the book, will be for sale at a special rate at the event. Several of the panelists will remain after the discussion to sign books.
