International journalist and local partners to discuss new book on refugee stories

Dying to LiveJournalist Danielle Vella, author of Dying to Live: Stories from Refugees on the Road to Freedom, will speak at Creighton at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25 in the Harper Center ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

Vella will offer reflections from her new book of personal stories of refugees from Morocco, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Eritrea, South Sudan, France, Serbia, Spain, Ethiopia, Uganda, Lebanon and the United States. Her book brings to light how the refugee experience is critical to creating a culture of welcome for all refugees and migrants.

Local University partner, Lutheran Family Services, and local community leader, James Bol Chuol, will also share their experiences and work.

Dying to Live shares the personal stories of these refugees in their own words. Some fled forced conscription, others fled when war exploded on their doorstep, still others were victims of ISIS or the Taliban. Then there are those who became refugees because they stood by what they believed to be the right thing to do – at any cost. They face many obstacles on their journey, including an often-unwelcoming new home where they hope to seek safety. Though many of the refugees’ journeys are harrowing through sea, mountains, or deserts, the book reveals the extraordinary courage, compassion, and hope of the refugees and those who help them along the way.

Newly printed photos of refugees photographed by Fr. Don Doll, SJ will be on display during the dessert reception following the presentation.

Campus and community partners will be available after the presentation to provide information on how to support local refugee communities in Omaha.
