Medical Grads Deliver Stellar Match Day

Match Day 2020The Creighton University School of Medicine achieved another stellar matching rate for its graduating students Friday, with 95% of 138 students matched to their specialty of choice.

Michael G. Kavan, PhD, associate dean for student affairs at the School of Medicine, said Creighton students in Omaha and Phoenix will serve their residencies in 29 states and the District of Columbia. Of these, 16 will travel to Arizona, where Creighton is building a $100 million health sciences campus in downtown Phoenix; 14 will head to Minnesota, 12 each to California and Nebraska and 11 to Missouri.

In addition to the Creighton University medical system, other prestigious programs that will provide homes for Creighton graduates include the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education, Northwestern, Penn, Rush, Emory, Vanderbilt, Stanford, UCSF, UCLA, UC-San Diego, George Washington University, Baylor, Mount Sinai, and Harvard.

“We congratulate all of our students on their success. We are so proud of our students and the success they had in the Match,” Kavan said.

Impacted by precautionary measures taken to stem the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Match Day looked different this year. Instead of gathering in the Ahmanson Ballroom in the Mike and Josie Harper Center in Omaha, or at the Sonntag Pavilion in Phoenix, where students traditionally cheer each other as they open the envelopes revealing their destinations, the graduating cohort was divided into various rooms where they received and opened their envelopes.

The look might have been different, but the nervousness as Match Day approached was the same as ever.

“There’s so much anticipation, there really is,” says Jakob Dovgan, class president for the 2020 graduates. “Once interview season gets wrapped up, pretty much all your attention turns to Match Day and thinking, ‘Oh, my gosh, once I open this envelope, what is my reaction going to be?’”

“You’re visualizing what it’s going to be like reading whatever name is in that envelope for the first time, learning where you will spend the next three to five years of your life. It’s a pretty intense experience, but very exciting and rewarding at the same time.”

The School of Medicine’s high matching rate was in keeping with recent years, which saw match rates to specialty of choice well in excess of 90 percent. In 2017, 94% of graduating medical students achieved their desired specialty, a figure that rose to 97 percent in 2018 and remained stable at 96 percent in 2019.

Graduates of the Creighton University School of Medicine are highly sought after by residency program directors. Ninety-nine percent of them tell Creighton administrators they would be happy to have more Creighton graduates in their programs. The follow-on effect of this enthusiasm means that Creighton graduates experience a competitive advantage at the many locations where fellow graduates are already training, which greatly improves their chances of finding residencies in their preferred fields.

Students this year matched into 20 different specialty areas. These comprised internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, general surgery, diagnostic radiology, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, anesthesiology, orthopedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, emergency medicine, urology, dermatology, otolaryngology, and ophthalmology.

Students also matched into interventional radiology, pathology, pediatrics/psychiatry/child psychiatry, plastic surgery, and urology.
