Creighton alumna earns prestigious Fulbright Award

Lulu AlvarezLulu Alvarez, BA’17, has received a Fulbright grant to teach English for a year in Mexico.

Alvarez, who recently spent two years in Andahuaylillas, Peru, with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, said she hopes her time in Mexico enhances her ability to eventually build a career in the medical field serving Hispanic communities in California.

Her desire to work in the medical field, she says, reflects her conviction that Hispanic Americans need more physicians who speak not only their language but also understand their culture.

Alvarez is the daughter of Mexican immigrants and one of six siblings who have earned, or are earning, university degrees.

At Creighton, Alvarez says, she found an academic environment that embraced her goals and treated her as family.

“I really didn’t know much about Creighton when I first applied,” she says. “But the communication I received from Creighton was unique and personal. They really made me feel like a valued member of the Bluejay community.

“Choosing Creighton was truly the best decision I ever made. It was a transformative four years filled with incredible people who helped shape me into the person I am today. I am very grateful to this community for many things. As a result of their love and support, I was able to submit a successful Fulbright application.

“I left Creighton three years ago, but I still feel incredibly connected. This speaks a lot for the kind of community Creighton fosters.”

Creighton University is a Jesuit, Catholic university bridging health, law, business and the arts and sciences for a more just world.
