Remembering Fr. Schlegel

Fr. Schlegel Tribute

Thanks to you, we met our $500,000 matching-gift goal.

But the work is never done.

Please consider continuing to recognize Fr. Schlegel's contributions to Creighton University with a gift to the John P. Schlegel, S.J., Center for Service and Justice endowment fund.. The Center inspires and encourages students to serve others and work for justice in an effort to create a better world for all.

Why an Endowed Gift?

Endowed funds support programs in perpetuity. This fund will honor Fr. Schlegel while supporting Creighton's mission of Ignatian values through the programs offered by the John P. Schlegel, S.J., Center for Service and Justice.

We Remember

May my life, my ending … praise and glorify God.*

The Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J., will be remembered for his life of service, faith and leadership.

In his 11 years as president of Creighton University, from 2000-2011, Fr. Schlegel consistently worked to enliven Creighton’s Jesuit, Catholic mission. He worked to serve God by making a difference on our campus, in the Omaha community and in the lives of so many he called friends and colleagues.

Let us pray for each other and all those mourning his death. Let us also pray for the souls of Fr. Schlegel and all the dearly departed, that they may find rest in eternal glory with God. We welcome the prayers of all faith traditions, and humbly offer the following prayer adapted from the Catholic Funeral Liturgy:

Lord, we entrust those who have died to your mercy:
welcome them into your presence.
You loved them greatly in this life,
now give them happiness and peace forever.
Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

(* The quote is from a February letter to family and friends, in which Fr. Schlegel announced that he had inoperable pancreatic cancer.)

Donations in memory of Fr. Schlegel are being accepted to the endowment fund for the John P. Schlegel, S.J., Center for Service and Justice. The campus office was officially renamed for Fr. Schlegel on April 19. Donations to the fund will be used to support the center’s programming today and into the future.

About the John P. Schlegel, S.J., Center for Service and Justice

The center was established in 1995 to bring together multiple efforts on the Creighton campus in the areas of community service and peace and justice initiatives.
