Cortina Vision Statement: The Cortina Community prepares students to connect their passion for justice with their future goals by challenging them to investigate social inequalities and difficult realities in a vulnerable way. We do this through service, examination of faith, purposeful learning, and living in community. We live together. In community. We learn together. In community. So they call us a "living-learning" community. We are a community comprised of sophomores, juniors and seniors; and we  live in community on Creighton University's campus. As a community, we care about things like justice, love, service, community-building and developing, faith, conversation, hospitality, politics, and the like. We like to think they are all very intertwined--and complex.  We don't think we have all the answers, but we are trying to work out what truth is, communally. We  work against the idea that we could find out what truth is  (and how to live it) by reading books alone and forsaking interaction with the world. We want to be aware of the world, and its many perspectives. So we go into it. There is a verse in the Bible that says "there is no fear in love, for perfect love casts out fear." We don't think we love perfectly, but when we participate in loving communities, we believe there is more courage to encounter the scary and unjust parts of our society and our selves. And hopefully, when we've encountered them, we have the courage to stay and sit in the oftentimes painful and difficult realities. Our presence and work there transform us and (we hope!) those around us. Our learning objectives for the program are as follows:

  • Students will develop mutually beneficial and compassionate relationships with people who suffer injustices.
  • Students will demonstrate awareness of local, national, or global social realities.
  • Students will engage critically questions concerning the meaning of justice and causes of injustice.
  • Students will reflect and act in the context of a faith that does justice.
  • Students will grow in their understanding of what it means to live in community.
