2008 Summer Reader Series

Summer 2008 IDEA Events

I.D.E.A. Summer Reading Group (2 units)

Limit: 20 members

Topic: White Privilege

Book: White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son

Author: Tim Wise

White Like Me is a personal examination of the way in which racial privileges shape the lives of white Americans in every realm of life: employment, education, housing, criminal justice and elsewhere. Using stories from his own life, Tim Wise demonstrates the ways in which racism not only burdens people of color, but also benefits in relative terms, those who are “white like him.” Wise also discusses the ways in which racial privilege can harm whites in the long run and make progressive social change less likely.

The Diversity Action Team (DAT) has 20 copies available for reading group members. These copies are “recyclable” and will be used in other reading groups, so you’ll be asked to refrain from making notes in the margin, highlighting and so forth. If you should like to purchase a personal copy, you may buy it from DAT for $15.

You must sign up for the reading group by May 20th and membership is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The first meeting of the group will be on Monday, May 26th from 12-1 p.m. in the Union Pacific Room. You are encouraged to read the first couple of chapters before the initial meeting.  The initial meeting will provide time for an introduction of each member of the book group and an introduction of the book/author/subject. The next discussion meeting will occur September 5th from 11:30-1 p.m. Please feel free to bring your lunch to each meeting.

The reading group will culminate in a luncheon book discussion with the author, Tim Wise. Mr. Wise will present a three-hour workshop on September 11 for the I.D.E.A. program, but reading group members will have personal time with him to discuss the book. If you have a personal copy, he will sign it for you! The location of the second meeting and the luncheon will be announced as we near the meeting date. The reading group will count for two (2) units of I.D.E.A. credit.
