Frequently Asked Questions about Summer Preview

What and when is Summer Preview? How much does it cost?

Generally speaking, Summer Preview is intended to prepare the incoming students and their families for the transition into college life by giving them the resources needed for the student to be successful at Creighton. Preview provides students with the opportunity to take meet with an academic adviser, get to know the campus, and to hear from different departments on campus like Student Activities, Residence Life, Financial Aid, Public Safety, and Food Services. It also provides students the chance to get to know current students, meet students in their class, and a chance to find out what campus life is all about. There is also a program for parents during Summer Preview to assist in the family's transition to life at CU.

The dates for Summer Preview 20145 are:
June 2-3
June 4-5
June 9-10
June 11-12

Students will be billed a $65 Orientation Fee on the fall tuition statement.  This fee covers the cost of Preview and therefore no fees are due at this time. There is a fee associated with Summer Preview for parents and other guests, this fee is due at the time of registration via credit card or after you register via check, and is also $65. On-campus housing is not available for non-students. Creighton rates are available at several hotels near campus. Hotel information can be found at the Summer Preview web site.  Checks for parent(s) and family members' registration fees should be made payable to CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY.

What if I cannot attend Summer Preview?

Participation in Summer Preview is strongly encouraged, but if you are unable to attend Summer Preview, the fall Welcome Week program will provide many opportunities for you to become better acquainted with our University. All new freshmen and transfer students will attend Welcome Week (fall orientation) beginning August 22, 2015. You will receive an email from Welcome Week in late July outlining all the activities for students and parents. Classes begin August 26, 2015. Please check Welcome Week's website for further information.

Do students have to stay in the residence halls?

Yes. Students are required to stay on campus because it gives them a chance to experience on-campus living and it also provides them with another opportunity to interact with their peers! Many students cite the overnight stay as one of their favorite parts of Preview!

What should I pack?

Housing Check-in for students will begin at 10:00am. We ask that all students stay on campus during our two-day Preview program. This arrangement maximizes your opportunity to get acquainted with your peers and the Preview staff. It will also assist you to become more familiar with the CU campus. Students will be assigned to a room with another student of the same gender in Kiewit Hall. Because rooms are designed for sleep and study, the furnishings are modest yet functional. All rooms are equipped with necessary bed linens, towels, and soap. You may wish to bring an alarm clock, hangers, toiletries, and an extra blanket if you get cold easily. Phone service is usually not available in the rooms, but there are pay phones in the residence hall lobby.

Can students stay on campus the night before or after their Preview session?

Yes, on a first come, first serve basis. Please indicate your housing needs on the registration form. Each additional night in the residence hall is $27 per night.

Why can't parents stay on campus?

Summer is a busy time on campus!  Between students taking summer classes and living in the halls, to hosting camps and conferences, we unfortunately do not have the room in our residence halls to accommodate all of our family members.  However negotiated Creighton rates have been established at a variety of local hotels for your convenience. Please see the Hotel Information tab for more details!

Will I register for classes before I come to Preview?

No, students will receive information about registration but during Summer Preview they will have the opportunity to meet with their Faculty Preceptor and create their schedule.  Students will register for those classes later in June.  Students are encouraged to go online and create a mock schedule,  this will provide for a more productive meeting with the Faculty Preceptor during Preview.

Can students get an early advising appointment?

The college or school that the student is enrolled in randomly assigns advising times. Only under extreme circumstances are early appointments arranged.  If you need special accommodations, please contact summerpreview@creighton.edu or note the information in your registration.  The request will be considered but cannot be guaranteed.

Will I have a chance to take a Foreign Language Competency Exam  while on campus?

Yes. Students may take a Foreign Language Competency Exam during Preview sessions. Advance registration for this exam is required. Please note that you must register for this exam.  Please take time to review the Language test information, you might just want to take the online placement exam.

Why am I asked to bring a non-perishable food item to Summer Preview?

Creighton University calls us to be men and women for and with others.  This year the Summer Preview student executive team has decided to partner with Siena/Francis House in Omaha.  To meet the daily needs of Siena/Francis House, we ask that you bring the following items to Preview Check In.  We'll make sure the items get to the people who need them.  Last year, we collected over 1,200 items to share with Siena/Francis.  Thank you in advance for embracing our community!

Are younger siblings allowed to attend?

Siblings and other family members are welcome at Summer Preview!  Registration for these guests can be completed online so that we can prepare for their meals.  Unfortunately no day care services are available and therefore younger siblings will be expected to attend sessions with parents/guardians.
