Intercultural Learning
The Department of Residence Life's mission statement details a commitment to personal growth and development. The following efforts are highlighted to further illustrate our department's commitment to intercultural learning and community development.
Community Partner Initiative - The Department of Residence Life began this initiative, the first in the nation, to help promote opportunities whereby students come face to face and heart to heart with various communities and cultures throughout the city of Omaha. Each residence hall or apartment at Creighton has partnered with a community agency or school to provide learning opportunities for Creighton students to attend weekly service trips or monthly events at their respective community partner.
Cortina Community - Started in Fall 2003, this sophomore-only, service-learning, living-learning community enables students to taste community living that incorporates serious commitment to service, social justice and the practice of reflection.
Eileen B. Lieben Center for Women - The Department of Residence Life annually supports this center to provide support to female students and programming on women's issues for all students. Programs include but are not limited to topics such as gender stereotyping, gender roles, sexuality and body image, and self-esteem.
Encuentro Dominicano - The Encuentro Dominicano program is a collaborative effort between Academic Affairs and the Department of Residence Life providing students a study abroad experience in the Dominican Republic.
Leadership for a Global Community - The Department of Residence Life asks all of its professional staff members and graduate student staff members to be certified via the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) "Leadership for a Global Community" (formerly Project C.O.R.E.). This certification provides additional training and resources to our professional and graduate staff members for use with our student leaders on campus.
NASPA's Undergraduate Fellow Program (NUFP) - The Department of Residence Life annually hosts a NUFP intern. The mission of NASPA's Undergraduate Fellows Program or NUFP is to increase the number of professionals from underrepresented groups in leadership roles in student affairs and higher education.
Student Staff Training - The Department of Residence Life annually asks its student staff to attend an extensive year-round training program including modules such as racism reduction, cultural sensitivity, sexual orientation, white privilege, and margninalizing.
