Witherup, S.S. is currently Superior General of the Society of the Priests of Saint Sulpice and lives in Paris, France.  He previously served eleven years in Baltimore as Provincial of the U.S. Province of Sulpicians.  In addition to master’s degrees in Old Testament and spirituality, he holds a Licentiate in Sacred Theology and a Ph.D. in biblical studies. He has had a longstanding interest in Catholic approaches to Sacred Scripture and is the author of many publications, books and articles, which have touched on a variety of biblical themes. Among his books pertinent to the present conference are Biblical Fundamentalism: What Every Catholic Should Know (Liturgical Press, 2001), Scripture: Dei Verbum (Paulist Press, 2006) and most recently The Word of God at Vatican II: Exploring Dei Verbum (Liturgical Press, 2014), which provides a user-friendly commentary on the dogmatic constitution for its fiftieth anniversary.  Other recent works include Saint Paul and the New Evangelization (Liturgical Press, 2013) and Gold Tested in Fire: A New Pentecost for the Catholic Priesthood (Liturgical Press, 2012).  Many of his works have been translated into Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, and other languages.  Father Witherup has also served as an editor for several large projects, including The Little Rock Scripture Study Bible (Liturgical Press, 2010), and Raymond E. Brown’s Christ in the Gospels of the Liturgical Year (Liturgical Press, 2008).  Despite his administrative duties, he continues his research and writing as time permits, focusing presently on two projects that concern the letters of Saint Paul.
