We have several acute inpatient psychiatric units, which provide psychiatric services to a wide range of patients. Six of the adult general psychiatric units are located at the Desert Vista Behavioral Health Campus in Mesa. There are three additional general psychiatric units and one combined special needs/general medicine unit that are located at the Annex campus. At the main medical campus in Phoenix, there is a psychiatric unit for medically complex patients. In addition, several more units are opening at Maryvale Hospital. The vast majority of patients on all of the units are hospitalized on an involuntary basis but there are also voluntary patients. 

The Valleywise Health Desert Vista Behavioral Health Center is a 122-bed psychiatric hospital located near downtown Mesa, Arizona. This Southwestern city with its dry, comfortable winters and hot summers, offers numerous cultural and recreational opportunities as well as a moderate cost of living. The State is well known for its multicultural population and thus the house staff is involved with the care of patients from a variety of cultural, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. The Department and Program are based in the Desert Vista Behavioral Health Center which opened in 2001 with facilities for teaching and clinical service. The Center has six inpatient adult units for voluntary and involuntary psychiatric treatment. Desert Vista has a resident run outpatient clinic as well as a dedicated behavioral health library including internet resources that have full access to multiple researchable web-based sites including the Arizona Health Information Network Cochrane, and Up-to-date. Resident physicians have their own offices and multiple classrooms are available for teaching and quiet study breaks.

The Valleywise Health Behavioral Health Annex is located in downtown Phoenix adjacent to the Valleywise Health Medical Center. It has 68 beds and includes a geriatric psychiatry unit. The consultation-liaison and emergency psychiatry services are also located in the Psychiatric Center.
Through its Department of Psychiatry, the Medical Center serves as the parent for the Psychiatric Residency Training Program and provides sponsorship, funds, faculty, and clinical settings for the program.
