Professor

M. Chad McBride, Ph.D. joined the faculty of Creighton in Fall 2003.  He has taught courses in Close Relationships, Interpersonal Communication, Discourse of the American Family, and Gender Communication as well as communication theory and research methods.
In his research, he is interested in how individuals communicatively co-construct situated identities in both our social networks and larger culture. In doing so, he studies communication within personal relationships and families, often using Facework and Communication Privacy Management as theoretical frameworks. Additionally, he studies communication about personal relationships by examining broader cultural representations and discourse about relationships in the media.
His work has been published in outlets such as Journal of Family Communication, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Communication Studies, Southern Communication Journal, Communication Reports, Electronic Communication Journal, and Handbook of Conflict Communication, and he has co-edited a book, Gender Actualized: Cases in Communicatively Constructing Realities, with Dr. Erika Kirby. He is also currently the incomoing President of the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender (www.osclg.org)
He is currently examining the work spouse relationship with Dr. Karla Bergen (College of Saint Mary). If you either have a work spouse, have been labeled a work spouse, or work with people who are work spouses, and are interested in sharing your experiences in an interview, please email Chad
To view Chad's additional teaching, scholarship, and service, please see his vitae.
