UPS Devices
This procedure refers to control of restricted materials known as Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS).
Introduction:
- UPS sizes are based on the amount of power consumed by the attached equipment. If you need some assistance, APC publishes a free estimating tool.
- If your building is on a dedicated generator, a small UPS (less than 6kVa) is recommended as it may take up to 15 minutes for generator to start and provide full building power.
Devices less than 6kVa in capacity:
- Typically used for single office electronics (computer, monitor, printer, etc).
- Most brands are acceptable with APC as the predominant user preference.
- These devices can be purchased from the University computer hardware and peripherals provider(s).
- Device batteries should contain either gel or 100% encapsulated lead acid.
- Though the device life expectancy depends on many factors, the University recommends replacing the device at least every 3 years.
- Old devices cannot be thrown in the trash. They qualify under state law as "universal waste" and require specific disposal procedures. Please complete a work order request for electronic recycling. At this time, the disposal is at no charge to the department.
Devices greater than 6kVa in capacity:
- These devices are typically used for mission critical equipment such as servers, telecommunications, and scientific/medical equipment.
- As electrical, mechanical, space, maintenance, and replacement must be addressed prior to selecting the device, please complete a work order request form requesting to purchase a UPS.
- We advise beginning the discussion at least 8 weeks prior to your anticipated delivery requirement.
- Depending on the environment, additional costs such as an electrician, may be required and are the responsibility of the requesting department.
