If you have experienced sexual and/or relationship misconduct, Creighton University is committed to offering you the resources and support you deserve. Remember that no matter the circumstances, you are not to blame. Give yourself permission to do what you need to do to take care of yourself.

You are entitled to receive the full range of resources and support services the University has to offer, including academic, employment, or housing accommodations; medical care; emotional support; and advocacy services.

The following offices on campus provide confidential care and support to individuals who have experienced sexual and/or relationship misconduct. These resources may also provide support for individuals who did not directly experience an incident of sexual and/or relationship misconduct, but who have been directly affected by incidents experiences by others close to them.

Because of the confidential nature of these resources, disclosing information to or seeking advice from a confidential resource does not constitute making a report or complaint to the University.

Medical Resources

Medical Resources

Creighton encourages all individuals who have experienced sexual or relationship misconduct to seek medical attention in order to address injuries and evaluate their overall health and well-being. Medical exams may also address non-apparent physical injuries, test for sexually-transmitted infections, provide emergency medication if needed, and/or preserve evidence related to what has occurred.

Seeking medical attention and preserving evidence may be important in case the individual decides to report the incident to Creighton University or law enforcement.

If you have experienced sexual or relationship misconduct and would like to receive medical care, the following resources are available to you. Confidential advocates from the Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) Center at Creighton University may accompany you as you access these medical resources if you’d like them to do so. You can connect with an advocate by going to the VIP Center, or by calling Public Safety (after business hours) at 402-280-2911 to request to speak with an advocate.

Preserving Evidence

Preserving Evidence

Creighton encourages individuals who have experienced sexual or relationship misconduct to preserve evidence of the incident(s) in order to maintain options for reporting the incident if and when they choose to do so. 

  • Electronic communications such as text messages, videos, pictures, or social media content (or screenshots of such evidence if it is not directly connected to your device or accounts) may be important to preserve if you want to report the incident.  
  • It is important to preserve physical evidence that may include tissue and fluid samples, evidence of violence, sheets, towels, clothing, etc. You may choose to avoid washing, showering, urinating, brushing teeth, changing clothes, etc., until after being examined by a medical professional or at the hospital, if possible. Because evidence of sexual or relationship misconduct can deteriorate quickly, you may choose to seek a medical exam as soon as possible. Evidence collection should be completed within 120 hours of an incident of sexual and/or relationship misconduct, but fluids, hair samples, and DNA can be collected for a long time thereafter. Even if you have washed, evidence can often still be obtained. After 120 hours, it may still be helpful to receive medical attention, even if you are not trying to obtain evidence of sexual or relationship misconduct.
  • If you suspect that you may have been drugged, inform medical personnel or law as soon as possible so they can attempt to collect potential evidence (e.g., from the drink, through urine or blood sample).

Creighton University strongly encourages you to report incidents of sexual and/or relationship misconduct. The University supports your choice to report your experiences in whatever way makes you most comfortable.

You have options about how you may report your experience. You can report an incident of sexual and/or relationship misconduct to the University, law enforcement, both, or neither. You do not have to formal report to the University in order to access campus resources.

Confidential reporting options exist both on- and off-campus. If you are not sure about your options or how you'd like to proceed with reporting your experience, these confidential reporting options can help to answer your questions and clarify the options and resources available to you.

Law Enforcement and Safety Resources

If you are in immediate danger, call 911 to receive emergency support.

Individuals who have experienced sexual and/or relationship misconduct have the right to file a police report. You do not have to file a police report in order to report an incident to the University, nor do you have to report an incident to the University in order to make a police report.

Individuals who choose to report an incident to the police may receive University support in doing so. The staff of the Violence Intervention and Prevention Center have experience reporting incidents to law enforcement and can help you understand and navigate the reporting process.

Protective Measures

The University can take immediate steps to protect you and to ensure your safety and well-being, as well as that of the campus community. Protective measures depend largely on the incident at issue and are determined by the University on a case-by-case basis. The intent is to minimize the burden on the you.

You do not need to make a formal report to the University to request protective measures.

Protective measures may include, but are not limited to:

  • Contact restrictions
  • The provision of escorts
  • Added Public Safety presence
  • Adjustments to on-campus living arrangements
  • Adjustments to class schedules or Creighton activities
  • Administrative separation from Creighton
  • Other protective measures deemed appropriate by the Executive Director for the Office of Equity and Inclusion.

Protective measures may be requested through the confidential staff of the Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) Center, or through the Office of Equity and Inclusion.
