Our 45+ year history of engagement in the Dominican Republic through the Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC), the Encuentro Dominicano, and our local partner, the Centro de Educación para la Salud Integral (CESI) have laid the groundwork for engagement in more areas of sustainable development. We already offer a joint MBA program with PUCMM, and students in Creighton's Encuentro Dominicano are able to take an elective course on Caribbean film at that university. Additionally, Creighton University sponsors PUCMM medical student rotations in Omaha at Bergan-Mercy Hospital.
The Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) is a private Catholic university with a campus in Santiago de los Caballeros (main) and one in Santo Domingo, as well as an extension center in Puerto Plata. Its mission is to ?Seek scientific solutions to the challenges facing the Dominican people and their global environment, and train leading professionals, endowed with ethical, humanistic and Christian principles, necessary for the material and spiritual development of society, maintaining the character of open space for the free discussion of ideas." It offers undergraduate degrees through four schools: Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts; Economics and Business; Science and Engineering? and Health Sciences. In the past decade research initiatives have grown significantly, and PUCMM now has 10 research centers (Human Development; Political and Social Studies; Urban and Regional Studies; Economic Studies; Literacy and Education; Caribbean Studies; Civic Education; Oceanic Studies; Religious Studies) that are complementary to the work of Creighton scholars in Omaha. PUCMM also counts on agreements with over 100 local and national organizations for internship and service opportunities.
Recently we also began exploring the possibility of collaboration with the Instituto Politécnico Loyola (IPL), a Jesuit technical and professional education institution in San Cristobal. This institute offers four undergraduate engineering degrees (industrial, electrical, computers/telecommunications, and agricultural). They have interest in initiating courses and service programs related to solar energy and have already been recognized as an institution that has integrated sustainability principles in its agricultural engineering program.
