Information for Creighton University Distance Education Students

Most of the Services and Resources provided through the Health Sciences Library are accessible on the web, via e-mail or by phone.

Remote access to our web-based resources is available to students with a current Creighton University Net-ID who access these resources through one of the Creighton Libraries web sites.

Please use your Creighton e-mail account when you correspond with the library, especially when you are expecting a reply or further information from us. Although other e-mail usually work as well, we have found through the years that there are many fewer problems when students use their Creighton accounts.

We also recommend you use "JayBucks" to pay for any fees you owe the library. JayBucks works like a debit card and you can make library payments simply by selecting the JayBucks option on request forms and including your NetID.

Students and employees may use their BLUE credentials to logon to StudentLink and view their account balances and history, board balance and history, report a lost card, or make a deposit.

Parents and guests may make a deposit by using StudentLink and clicking on "Add Jaybucks Here" on the menu on the left side.

Parents and guests may view account balances and history and board balance and history, but first must have your student login to StudentLink and grant access to you.

Information Retrieval

Many of the resources provided on the library are accessible online via the library's web site under the Resources menu on the left side of the page. The resources are organized by program and subject in the menu list on the left side of our web pages.

  • New students should browse all the potentially relevant pages to get a feeling for the rich number of resources available.
  • Under the Help menu you will find tutorials and guides for using many of our resources.
  • Use the Search HSL function if you are having trouble locating a resource.

The Reference Service staff will conduct literature searches for Health Sciences students and deliver the results via e-mail. This is a free service.  Searches will be conducted for students 7 days a week during normal Reference Service hours. Request a search using the Literature Search Request form.

For other types of assistance with information retrieval problems, including guidance on using a particular resource, contact the staff at the Reference Desk via e-mail  (refdesk@creighton.edu) or by phone (402) 280-5138.

Information Management

All Creighton Universtiy students, faculty and staff have access to RefWorks.

  • RefWorks is a web-based personal bibliographic database manager.  Use it to create your own bibliographic database, format bibliographies, and share references with colleagues or classmates.
  • To access these programs, create an account, or view a tutorial, click the RefWorks tab on the top toolbar.

Document Delivery

  • Pull and Copy Service
    • We will scan print materials for students and deliver as a pdf e-mail attachment. There is currently no charge for this service, but copyright restrictions apply.
    • If you are having trouble retrieving a document from an e-journal or other web-based resource, we will assist you and, if necessary, send the document to your e-mail account for you.
    • Please use our request forms to place your order.
  • Interlibrary Loan
    • Most articles and other selected materials are sent as pdf files. Books will be sent via U.S. mail.
    • There is currently no charge for Interlibrary Loan service. Books borrowed via Interlibrary Loan may be assessed an overdue fee by the lending library if returned late.
      • Take advantage of  any libraries in your area. Even if you aren't a student at that institution, most libraries will allow the public to photocopy materials or even print web-based information at the library. This often means that if you go to your local library you may be able to print articles from e-journals and e-books there, which you don't have privileges to access remotely.
    • Allow 3-5 days delivery on most items. Items that must be mailed and obscure or unusual items may take 1 to 2 weeks for delivery.
    • Please use our request forms to place your order.

Educational Services

  • Electronic Reserves: Many classes have assignments and readings that are made available via BlueLine.  Please check with your instructor or the Circulation Department (402) 280-5109 with any questions.
  • We are happy to help you learn to use any of our resources. Please contact the Reference staff for assistance with database searching and RefWorks at (402) 280-5138. For help with e-journals or the library catalog (JaySearch) contact the staff at the Main Desk at (402) 280-5109.
