Programs for Community

The purpose of the Creighton University Center for Promoting Health and Health Equity (CPHHE) Community Health Advocates is to provide training to "lay- individual" volunteers in Omaha to become Community Health Advocates within their communities.

Through this training, these individuals will contribute to the improvement of health in the community. The Community Health Advocates will also help to change the attitude of the community to health and healthcare.

  • Audience: Lay volunteers over 21
  • Method: Instructor-led course
  • Duration: 10 weeks (meets weekly)

Creighton is currently running an extended Community Health Worker Training Program.

This is a university non-credit professional development program.

Training Objectives

CHA Training will focus on prevention, identification, and treatment of Chronic Disease. The training will help to improve the knowledge, skills, and attitude of the participants. It will also provide the tools to navigate the healthcare system.

Candidates for the CPHHE's Community Health Advocate program must:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be able to read, write, and comprehend English at a 6th grade level or above
  • Be willing to undergo the training by Creighton University, HS-MACA, CPHHE and its annual continuing education program
  • Be a licensed driver with an insured vehicle in working condition
  • Be knowledgeable and able to travel within the assigned community
  • Be recommended as a leader by faith-based organizations, community organizations, or community leadership
  • Be reliable and dependable
