Dec. 6, 2021

With final examinations beginning this week and the year-end holidays approaching, I want to congratulate each of you on the near-completion of a very successful semester. In spite of challenging circumstances still imposed by the pandemic, you have moved Creighton University forward in significant ways, and I am truly grateful.

To that end, I am excited to share that we are extending the holiday break by an extra day this month. In addition to Christmas Eve, and the week of Dec. 27-31, Thursday, Dec. 23, will also be observed as an additional holiday for faculty and staff. I hope you enjoy the gift of additional time to rest and recharge, and if you have the availability and the vacation accrued, please take additional time off. There is no better time to use it with a busy spring semester just around the corner, and you no doubt deserve it.

Our collective list of accomplishments this semester is once again as lengthy as it is remarkable. It includes academic, service, and athletic achievements, including a conference championship for our women’s volleyball team and a fantastic start to the season for our men’s basketball team. We welcomed our new health sciences colleagues and students in Phoenix, and broke ground on a new residence hall and interprofessional health sciences center in Omaha. We also welcomed our second-largest freshman class, completed a campus climate survey, announced our most ambitious fundraising campaign, Forward Blue, and just today, are soft-launching a revitalized website. And that is just a partial list.

I look forward to toasting our shared accomplishments at our University Holiday Parties in Omaha and Phoenix – events for which I am thankful are back on the calendar. In Omaha, the holiday event is Tuesday, Dec. 14, from 3 to 6 p.m. (CST), in the Ahmanson Ballroom on the fourth floor of the Mike and Josie Harper Center. In Phoenix, the party is on Wednesday, Dec. 15, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. (MST) in the Doris S. Norton Ballroom.

Looking ahead to the new year, our Presidential Lecture Series will welcome three outstanding speakers in Omaha, beginning Feb. 9, and one in Phoenix on Feb. 23. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details. I hope to see many of you during the activities that accompany Founder’s Week Feb. 7-11, including my usual address to campus on Feb. 8.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and a joyous new year to each of you! May God’s peace and love bless your hearts and homes this holiday season and beyond. Thank you for all you do for Creighton and our students.
