PA Preceptors

Information for PA Program Preceptors

At the Creighton University PA Program, we know preceptors are key to a complete student experience. Preceptors provide the hands-on clinical learning experiences for our students over the course of their training. Creighton PA Preceptors must be board certified and licensed physicians (MD or DO), PAs or nurse practitioners and have at least one year of experience in their current specialty. Our preceptors help guide the next generation of PAs in a wide variety of specialties.

In addition to elective experiences in specialties and subspecialties across the medical spectrum, all students complete clinical rotations in the following specialties:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Mental Health
  • Family Medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • General Surgery
  • Women’s Health
  • Internal Medicine

Become a preceptor

Creighton is always looking for outstanding sites for our students. To meet our program’s requirements, we need high-quality physicians, PAs and NPs to serve as preceptors in various practice settings. We look for providers who serve as teachers, mentors, and role models for our students.

Practicing providers who serve as preceptors play a critical role in educating and training students in the real-world clinical practice environment. In addition to medical knowledge, these experiences are essential to ensuring that students become competent and caring professionals.

The benefits of being a clinical preceptor are numerous, most notably the personal satisfaction of giving back to the profession. Preceptors also grow professionally by keeping abreast of current medications and treatment modalities and networking with potential future employees. As a preceptor, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills in your area while supervising student activities, evaluating performance and providing meaningful feedback.

Benefits

Serving as a Creighton preceptor is a rewarding experience:

  • Rewarding both personally and professionally. Current preceptors enjoy giving back to the profession.
  • Preceptors play a crucial role in the development of future PAs and the profession. High-quality preceptors and educational experiences are vital in training students to provide excellent patient care, which leads to highly skilled PAs continually improving their practice.
  • Preceptors can also learn from PA students by having students share information about current/new medications and novel approaches to treatment modalities and/or practice.
  • Preceptors can market their practice site as an appealing future place of employment for graduates. Many graduates select jobs in hospitals and clinics where they participated in a clinical education experience.
  • Free online access to Creighton University Health Sciences Library. A few of the resources offered include electronic full journal access, electronic drug information references, electronic textbooks, and Medline. Preceptors who want access to Library Resources need to contact our office at DarwinBrown@creighton.edu.
  • Opportunities for continuing professional development as a practitioner and educator. Preceptors have access to CME programs (online and webinar) and various teaching resources. Preceptors also have access to Category 1 CME through Creighton University and the Physician Assistant Education Association.
  • Contributed-service faculty appointment (clinical instructor rank) in Creighton’s School of Medicine. Preceptors who routinely take Creighton students are eligible for this appointment.
