Jan. 31, 2017: Project Homeless Connect Omaha

Creighton University President, the Rev. Daniel Hendrickson, SJ

With my support, Creighton will again host Project Homeless Connect Omaha on Friday, March 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Kiewit Fitness Center. Primary goals of the event are to address immediate needs of individuals experiencing homelessness and empower them to access follow-up services.

Launched by Creighton alumnus Ed Shada and Creighton’s Schlegel Center for Service and Justice (SCSJ), Project Homeless Connect Omaha is a one-day event dedicated to serving individuals experiencing homelessness by providing health screenings and access to community resources in one convenient location. This event is coordinated through a partnership between the Center for Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research (CIPER) and the SCSJ, and encompasses more than 45 external community partners.

There are many opportunities for Creighton students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends to volunteer. You can sign up to help in the morning, midday, or all day. Most volunteers will serve as “navigators” to guide guests through the process of accessing services. Health sciences volunteers with specialized education and licensure will provide health screenings through an interprofessional practice teaching model. Additional volunteers are needed for set-up, clean-up, registration, and food service. Last year, more than 400 guests were connected to services and over 1,000 volunteers participated in myriad roles as navigators, health providers/screeners, or on an implementation team.

I encourage employees to participate as volunteers for Project Homeless Connect Omaha. Creighton has approved staff to use excused paid time to volunteer at this event. It is important, however, to obtain prior approval from supervisors to ensure departments have the coverage necessary to conduct business.

Thank you for reaching out to assist those experiencing homelessness in our community. Participation in this event promotes the Creighton mission, personal growth, and professional formation grounded in experiences as men and women for and with others.
