Nov. 19, 2018
Prior to our imminent Thanksgiving break, I have a brief update regarding the tragic death of a Jesuit and Creighton alumnus, strategic planning forums, recent SimplyWell leadership challenge, and the upcoming Christmas at Creighton celebration and holiday party.
As Fr. Andy Alexander referenced in a message to the Prayer Request email list this morning, I too am saddened about the death of Fr. Victor-Luke Odhiambo, SJ, MA’90, MS’91, who was assigned to the Eastern Africa Province of the Jesuits. Creighton is a member of the USA Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus, which is “twinned” with the AOR Province (East Africa).
The region where Fr. Odhiambo and other Jesuits reside is a dangerous place and is replete with many armed groups, as a struggle for peace and justice continues in the region. Our province has been helping the dioceses at Cueibet with establishment of a pioneer teachers’ training college. Please remember Fr. Odhiambo and those who survived the attack in your prayers. The state government announced three days of mourning in honor of Fr. Odhiambo.
Thank you to everyone who has attended strategic planning campus forums this fall. The final forum of the semester, which is focused on Global Partnerships, will be Tuesday, Nov. 20, beginning at 11 a.m. in Skutt Student Center, Room 105.
In addition, early next week I will be sharing a video message with you that contains updates for many of the goals. We continue making good progress on our initiatives, and I am excited about the results being reported by goal stewards.
Every fall during the period leading up to our annual benefits open enrollment, there is a friendly challenge among campus leadership regarding participation in SimplyWell screenings. Please view a video message from me regarding the wonderful results.
Finally, and following the Thanksgiving break, I am looking forward to seeing you at two campus Christmas celebrations.
On Wednesday, Nov. 28, beginning at 4:45 p.m., a tradition dating back more than 30 years will be held in front of St. John’s Church. The Christmas at Creighton lighting ceremony, which is coordinated by Inter Residence Hall Government, is the time when all campus decorations are officially illuminated to mark the start of the holiday season.
Then, on Dec. 11 from 3-6 p.m., all faculty and staff are invited to attend the annual Christmas party in the Harper Center Ballroom. No RSVP is required this year, but please mark your calendar to join your colleagues for this festive occasion. I always look forward to spending time with you in this casual setting as we prepare to celebrate Christmas.
As we gather with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, let us also acknowledge our many gifts. Indeed, I am grateful for all of our faculty and staff and the tremendous work you do on a daily basis to educate, serve, and inspire our students.
