Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
This week, I have heard from students, alumni, and others regarding a sexual assault investigation that concluded last month. Consistent with Creighton’s privacy policies, however, I cannot provide details of the investigation conducted by the University’s Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI).
After exploring the case in question with senior members of my administration, I am confident that all procedures were followed, including a complete review of the investigative report conducted by Interim Provost Dr. Tom Murray in his role as the final arbiter in the appeal process.
Some in our community have also expressed concern over existing University policies that dictate how sexual assault allegations are adjudicated, and others have called for a review of the policies. Although this type of review does occur frequently, I believe this is a reasonable request given the concern expressed recently.
Today, I am announcing that I will soon appoint a committee of Creighton students, faculty, and staff to review existing policies that govern sexual and relationship misconduct. I will ask the group to present its findings and recommendations to Dr. Murray; Dr. Tanya Winegard, vice provost for Student Life; and me.
Additionally, in her role as the most senior administrator over issues concerning students, I have asked Dr. Winegard to host a listening session to occur imminently. Information about both the review committee and the listening session will be forthcoming in the next few days.
I very much appreciate the concern expressed by many of you recently, and be assured that I will provide further updates on the policy review as we move through the semester.
Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ
