Musical Theatre (Bachelor of Fine Arts)

Explore all aspects of theatre, dance and music—on and off the stage—in Creighton’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in musical theatre degree. The bachelor’s degree will give you a foundational knowledge and lifelong appreciation of a unique type of theatre that combines songs, dialogue, acting and dance into one unified performance.

As a musical theatre major at Creighton, you’ll perform on the Mainstage and in the Studio Theatre in the beautiful Lied Education Center for the Arts. You’ll also work with faculty members who are active in the local theatre community and can help you land summer internships and job opportunities.

Program Goals

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre degree will prepare you to be a versatile performer, ready to contribute complex, valuable skill sets to the field.

As a musical theatre major, you’ll learn:

  • How to use all of your gifts in tandem, to tell a dramatic story through music, theatre and dance, whether you are on stage or behind the scenes
  • Teamwork and cooperation by being part of a community of performers
  • An appreciation of fine and performing arts
  • How to be respectful of others and how to tell a dramatic story through music, theatre and dance

Curriculum

Along with Creighton’s core requirements, there are 52 credits within the musical theatre curriculum.

Admissions Requirements

Creighton admissions are based upon:

  • High school GPA
  • ACT or SAT scores*
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Personal statement to demonstrate creative abilities not reflected in your transcripts
  • Recommendation from high school counselor
  • Honors sections and advanced placement courses will enhance a candidate’s application
*For students who are choosing to apply test-optional, ACT/SAT exam scores are not required at the time of application for admission.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of actors, producers, directors, dancers and choreographers is predicted to grow between 3% and 14% by 2022. Increasingly, a bachelor’s degree is considered the entry-level degree in the field.
