Gain an in-depth understanding of Scripture, the Christian faith, and the Ignatian tradition through Creighton University’s Master of Arts in Christian Spirituality. This renowned program is best suited for those already in ministry who would like to grow spiritually through reflection, prayer, and communal worship.

Students who complete this program often go on to work in teaching or ministry with the ability to address urgent issues currently facing our world with a response from a Christian perspective.

This 33-credit program is only offered during the summer on-site at Creighton University’s campus. Two, four-week sessions are offered each summer, allowing students to complete the program in as little as three years.

Curriculum

To earn a Master of Arts in Christian Spirituality at Creighton University, you must complete 33 credits:

  • An orientation to graduate study, which is held the Sunday before the first day of class
  • An extended Ignatian retreat before enrolling or during the course of study
  • Discernment of Spirits: Theory and Practice
  • Scriptural Foundation in Christian Spirituality
  • One of the following:
    • Liturgical Foundation of Christian Spirituality
    • Doctrinal Foundation of Christian Spirituality
  • One of the following:
    • History of Christian Spirituality
    • Called to Holiness: The Christian Vocation
    • History of Ignatian Tradition
  • One of the following:
    • Prayer and Christian Spirituality
    • Prayer, Intimacy, and True Christian Growth
    • Contemplation in the Christian Tradition
  • One of the following:
    • Biblical Roots for Peace and Justice Ministry
    • Spirituality and Social Concerns
    • Spirituality of Reconciliation: Global and Social Perspectives
  • Electives – complete 15 credit hours from the following:
    • Any of the following classes:
      • Dreams and Spiritual Growth
      • Spirituality of John
      • Centering Prayer and the Experiencing of God
      • Contemplative Theological Reflection
      • Salesian Spirituality
      • Art and Spirituality
      • Psychological Foundations and Practice of Forgiveness
      • Spirituality of Paul
      • Women and the Bible
      • Marian Spirituality
      • Jungian Psychology and Christian Spirituality
      • Theology and Spirituality of Conversion
      • Spanish Mysticism
      • Theology of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius
      • Spirituality and Sexuality
      • Ministerial Care in Times of Trauma
      • True Self/False Self: the Enneagram and Spiritual Transformation
      • Giving 19th Annotation Retreats
      • Counseling for Spiritual Direction

No thesis is required, but an integrating essay of approximately 25 pages is required at the conclusion of the program.

Admissions Requirements

The requirements listed below apply to the Master of Arts in Christian Spirituality program only.

  • Bachelor’s degree, regardless of field of study.
    1. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA
    2. Applicants must have 12 recent credits in undergraduate theology, including Old Testament, New Testament, Theological Ethics and Contemporary Christian Theology.
    3. Applicants must have at least two years of regular spiritual direction and must currently be receiving spiritual direction.
  • Applicants must share the spiritual goals of the program.
  • Completed application (requires non-refundable $50 fee).
  • Three letters of recommendation, all of which must address the applicant’s life of faith and prayer, aptitude for ministry, and aptitude for graduate work.
  • Short letter of introduction, explaining reasons for pursuing the degree.
  • International Students Only:
    1. Applicants must present original and complete educational credentials
    2. All foreign applicants are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and pass with a score of at least 90 on the iBT (internet-based test).
    3. Complete and submit the Certification of Available Finances Form and an Insurance Verification Form on the Global Engagement Office site.
    4. Note: A SEVIS fee is required. Information about the SEVIS fee will be sent with your I-20. Contact Shama Ali in the Global Engagement Office at sali [at] creighton [dot] edu for questions.
    5. International applicants should complete the admission process by Jan. 1.

 

Tuition & Scholarships

Tuition
Creighton University awards all Master of Arts in Ministry students a 50 percent tuition remission, resulting in a rate of $425 per credit for the 2017-18 academic year. Tuition rates change in the fall of each year.

Summer Housing & Meals
Housing is available for students attending on-campus residencies in the summer. This housing consists of a shared suite that includes two private bedrooms, a shared bathroom, a small common living space with some furniture, a microwave and a small refrigerator.

Certificate Options

Graduate Certificate in Spiritual Direction and Directed Retreats (18 credits)

  • Ideal for someone with a strong background in theology, this graduate certificate helps students develop ministerial skills and attitudes. Several of the core courses of the Master of Arts in Christian Spirituality program are included as part of this program.
  • Credits earned for this graduate certificate can be applied toward a Master of Arts in Christian Spirituality degree.

Graduate Certificate in Ignatian Tradition (9 credits)

  • Immerse yourself in the theology and history of the Ignatian tradition. Perfect for anyone employed by a Jesuit university, high school, refugee service, or other institution, this graduate certificate includes a ten-day travel course to Ignatian places of northern Spain, Paris and Rome. This trip incorporates the elements of personal prayer and reflection.
  • Credits earned for this graduate certificate can be applied toward a Master of Arts in Christian Spirituality degree.
