Elementary Education | Metro Community College A to B (Bachelor of Science)

Through a partnership with Metropolitan Community College (MCC) in Omaha, students who have earned the Associate in Applied Science Early Childhood Education at MCC may be eligible to earn the Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at Creighton. A bachelor’s degree in elementary education will prepare you to teach K-8 in a parochial school or K-6 in a public school.

This program blends theory and practical experience and includes opportunities to serve as tutors, teachers’ assistants and student teachers in Omaha public and private schools. This associate to bachelor’s (A to B) program is offered through the Department of Education in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Program Details

The early childhood education coursework completed at MCC will apply toward the early childhood education endorsement requirements at Creighton University. Students who successfully complete the A to B program will be eligible for their teaching certificate in elementary education with an early childhood education endorsement. This credential will enable these educators to teach preschool and pre-K programs. In the program, you’ll learn:

  • How to be an effective elementary teacher in the Jesuit tradition
  • How to inspire children to learn through classroom leadership skill
  • How to be an ethical thinker and creative problem solver

For students who are interested in earning a special education endorsement, a Dual Endorsement for Elementary Education (PK-6, PK-8) with Special Education Endorsement is available.

This is a 75-credit program. Beyond the required courses to fulfill the associate degree at MCC, students will need to complete the remaining degree requirements listed below. In addition to their associate degree, students may also complete an additional three courses at MCC toward their Creighton bachelor’s degree requirements.

Students who did not complete ECED2061 as part of their AAS program will be required to complete the course at MCC or complete EDU 583: Management Practices for Classroom Teachers at Creighton University.

All Creighton teacher education programs are fully accredited by state, regional and national accrediting agencies, including the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Admissions Requirements

To be considered for admission to this program, qualified applicants must show evidence of:

  1. Graduation with a minimum 2.75 GPA from Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, Nebraska
  2. Successful completion of the AAS degree in early childhood education with a grade of C or higher in all courses that apply to the degree
  3. Passing scores in the PRAXIS Core Academic Skills for Educators Exam in all three components: Reading (156), Writing (162), Math (150)

To achieve a degree from Creighton University, students are required to complete a minimum of 128 credit hours. A minimum of 48 hours must be completed in residence (on campus or online) at Creighton. A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 is required for graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. This average shall be computed only on the basis of all courses attempted while enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences in the program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education.

Application Process

  • Create an account and begin the Adult Undergraduate Application for Admission.
  • Once you have entered the application, the Academic Program choice needs to be “Elementary Education (Metro Community College A+B)”.
  • All applicants may upload an optional personal statement within the application. While a personal statement is not required, it is highly recommended, to provide the admission committee with an opportunity to holistically review your application.
  • Final, official transcripts must be provided directly from the granting institution. Transcript should be mailed to the address below or directed via email through an official transcript processing company to EnrollmentServices@creighton.edu
