The Dialysis Clinic, Inc. - J. Dan Egan, M.D., Endowed Chair in Nephrology in the School of Medicine is named in honor of J. Dan Egan, M.D., professor of medicine. The chair inaugural was held at Creighton University on Sept. 20.

Dr. Eganís medical career has spanned 64 years. He joined the Universityís Department of Internal Medicine in 1954, served as chief of nephrology and currently teaches and mentors Creighton students at the Omaha Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). Egan received his medical degree from the University of Buffalo, Buffalo, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps as well as in the U.S. Public Health Service. Dr. Egan founded the dialysis program at the VAMC, where he served as chief of nephrology from 1967-1999.

Creightonís School of Medicine has recognized him with numerous awards, including: the student-selected Golden Apple Award, the Distinguished Professor Award, the J.F. Sullivan Award for Excellence and Dedication to Resident Teaching. He also received the Creighton University Distinguished Faculty award in 1988. In 2005, the Nebraska Chapter of the American College of Physicians presented him the Dedicated Teacher Award.

The endowed chair was made possible by a gift from Dialysis Clinic, Inc. (DCI), a leading dialysis provider in the United States. DCI operates a network of more than 200 nonprofit dialysis centers across the country; four DCI centers in the metropolitan Omaha area serve as teaching sites for Creighton University health sciences students and the medical directors of these sites are Creighton nephrology faculty. DCIís mission to improve the lives of renal dialysis patients through its nonprofit centers has led to a commitment to research and education. In line with that commitment, the DCI-Egan Chair supports teaching and research at the School of Medicine to benefit patients with kidney disease.

The Dialysis Clinic, Inc.- J. Dan Egan, M.D., Endowed Chair in Nephrology is the 37th endowed chair to be established at Creighton University. The School of Medicine now has 11 endowed chairs.
