Creighton's Interfaith Prayer Service tradition continues to inspire

The diverse spirit of Creighton University was once again on display Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 7, at the Interfaith Prayer Service at St. John’s Church.

Held as a cornerstone during Creighton Founders Week, the Interfaith Prayer Service attracted about 200 people, including 115 representatives from various office, departments and organizations around campus. As University Provost Tom Murray, PhD, noted in his introduction to the service, Creighton’s Jesuit, Catholic mission is marked by a celebration of all faith traditions and pathways.

“The Society of Jesus has highlighted interfaith cooperation and prayer among its most important tasks at its last two General Congregations,” Murray said. “Flowing from both a history of reverencing other religious cultures and a very urgent need in a divided world to appreciate the diversity of religious cultures, we gather today to celebrate this Interfaith Prayer Service.”

Themed “Belonging Together,” this year’s service again united the common call of all faiths and celebrated the many spiritual communities on the Creighton campus.

Each year, a group of students, the Interfaith Student Leadership Team, takes on the theming and steering of the service and spends the fall semester planning for the celebration. This year’s leadership team represented the Jewish, Sikh, Muslim, Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Hindu, Lakota and Buddhist faith traditions. A wide array of other faith traditions was also represented among the faculty and staff representatives.

The service culminated, as it usually does, with the St. John’s sanctuary illuminated by candles held by representatives from each of the leadership team. That light is then passed, candle to candle, to the rest of the congregation, creating a warm glow complementing the sinking winter light outside the church.

Creighton University is a Jesuit, Catholic university bridging health, law, business and the arts and sciences for a more just world.
