Omaha native Kenneth Adkins’ latest work to be featured in Lied Art Gallery exhibition

Detail of painter Kenneth Adkins' "The Black Lodge #3."The work of artist and sculptor Kenneth Adkins has been variously described as frantic, stable, brooding and confrontational. His style and materials range from the traditional to the innovative with his bodies of work moving in seemingly disparate ways while still tied together by identifiable strains.

Feb. 23 through March 27, Adkins’ most recent work will be the featured exhibition in Creighton University’s Lied Education Center for the Arts Gallery, with an artist’s reception Friday, Feb. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m.

With harrowingly rendered canvases, Adkins also delves into using layered mixed media, including the use of house paint, newsprint and even clothing to delve into socio-psychological questions and afflictions. The artist has said he wants his work to explore a capacious space, documenting and preserving ideas, observations, and situations central to the multifarious human condition. Weathered textures and historical sensibilities are trademarks of his work. Attention to texture, color, and space within a composition are consistent with all bodies of work.

“Several bodies of work are produced simultaneously,” Adkins said. “Though the pieces within one set are almost always drastically different from works of another in regards to imagery and composition, common threads are found linking the bodies of work together as a whole.”

An Omaha native, Adkins’ works have been purchased for the permanent collections of Joslyn Art Museum, Salford Zine Library in Manchester, United Kingdom, Jun Kaneko, and numerous private collections internationally.

Lied Art Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The gallery will be closed during Spring Break, March 4 through 11.
