31st annual Symposium on Jewish Civilization looks at authority and dissent in Jewish life

The 31st annual Symposium on Jewish Civilization will take place Oct. 28 and 29 at multiple locations around the Omaha area.

The Symposium is hosted by Creighton University’s Klutznick Chair in Jewish Civilization and the University’s Kripke Center for the Study of Religion and Society, along with the Harris Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the Schwalb Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the Jewish Federation of Omaha.

This year’s Symposium will look at the role of authority and dissent in Jewish life, with presentations taking place at UNO on Oct. 28 from 9 to 11:30 a.m., in Room 132D of the College of Public Affairs and Community Service, and from noon to 5 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center, 333 S. 132nd St., in Omaha.

The evening of Oct. 28, Gil Graff, PhD, executive director of Builders of Jewish Education, will deliver a keynote address titled “Jewish Law and the Law of the State: The Impact of Modernity and Its Echoes in the United States.”

Oct. 29, presentations continue from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the Mutual of Omaha Ballroom at the Skutt Student Center on the Creighton campus.

Events are free and open to the public, with the exception of the keynote address, which is by invitation. For more information and to see a list of presenting scholars, visit the Klutznick Chair website.
