Africa Rising Week set to begin Sept. 27

Creighton University’s third annual Africa Rising Week celebration will take place Sept. 27 to 30, with a musical performance, an outreach opportunity and a culminating Mass.

Africa Rising Week is a spiritual, social and academic celebration of the richness of African life and the African diaspora around the world, including in Omaha. Events are funded by the Creighton Intercultural Center, the Intercultural Student Engagement Council, the Committee on Lectures, Films and Concerts, and the Creighton Global Initiative.

This year’s celebration kicks off Thursday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with a performance by South Sudanese-Canadian artist Emmanuel Jal at the Hixson-Lied Auditorium. Jal is a former child soldier now advocating for peace and justice through activism, poetry and music. Following the performance, he will host a question-and-answer session. Traditional African food, including lamb, chicken, or bean stew, and pastries, will be served in the atrium outside of the auditorium from 5 to 6 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 28, from 1:45 to 5 p.m., the Schlegel Center for Service and Justice’s weekly outreach opportunity will incorporate Africa Rising Week into its service. Opportunities are available at the Yates Community Center and the Lutheran Family Services. Buses to the service sites depart from Deglman Circle.

The week concludes with an African Mass Pilgrimage at St. Benedict the Moor Parish, 2423 Grant St., in Omaha. Mass participants will begin walking from Deglman Circle at 8:30 a.m., to make it to St. Benedict the Moor for the 9 a.m. Mass.
