15th annual Asian Culture Week focuses on values, history, art

Past, present, and future will be on display later this month as Creighton University presents its 15th annual Asian Culture Week, April 22 to 26.

This year’s Asian Culture Week theme is “Keeping the Past Alive: In Appreciation of the Preserved Asian Values.” The week kicks off Monday, April 22 with a 5 p.m. celebration of Earth Day with a visit to the Friendship Tree planted in the Jesuit Gardens reflecting the bond between Creighton, Nanjing University and the Nanjing University for the Arts.

“The value of art and culture are so central to Asian life, to all life,” said Maorong Jiang, PhD, director of the Asian World Center at Creighton and a professor of political science. “We look forward to a week full of sharing stories and insights and to deepening our understanding of how cultures intersect and interact with one another and the central place of art, values, and culture in that conversation.”

Also on April 22 opens a photography exhibition, “Out of Focus: China’s Countryside in Radical Transformation,” a joint venture between Creighton’s Asian World Center and the Nanjing University for the Arts. The exhibition features work from Chinese artists and graduate students at Nanjing University for the Arts. It's is a continuation of a joint project between Creighton students led by Jinmei Yuan, PhD, a professor in the Department of Philosophy, and Chinese counterparts in Nanjing, with a grant from the University of Dayton.

The exhibition is in the Skutt Student Center Art Gallery on the Creighton campus. Guided tours of the exhibition are available from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily during Asian Culture Week.

Tuesday, April 23, the art exhibition’s opening reception takes place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., with a variety of Asian dishes served. The reception is hosted by artists from Nanjing University and the Nanjing University of the Arts.

Following the exhibition, a luncheon will be held between noon and 1:30 p.m., with speaker Betty Chin, a writer who penned a brief history of Chinese settlement in Omaha. The event will take place in Room 104 of the Skutt Student Center.

Wednesday, April 24, a keynote luncheon featuring Creighton Jesuit the Rev. Don Doll, SJ, and Xiaosi Yang, PhD, a professor at Harold Washington College in Chicago, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in Room 104 of the Skutt Student Center.

Fr. Doll, an internationally recognized photographer, will present “Long Live Native Americans: A Journey Among the Sioux Indians of North America.” Yang, author of Philosophy of Family, will deliver a talk titled, “Ritual and Moral Life: Reclaiming the Tradition.”

A faculty roundtable conversation will take place Thursday, April 25, with Jinmei Yuan, PhD, professor in the Department of Philosophy, presenting “Economic Development and its Impact on Rural Culture in China.” The discussion will be moderated by Edward A. Morse, JD, professor of law and McGrath North Mullin & Kratz Chair in Business Law at the Creighton School of Law. The conversation will be in Room 255 at the law school.

The week rounds out with a panel discussion on Friday, April 26, from noon to 1:30 p.m., in the Asian World Center, Becker Hall, Room G25.

Eight panelists comprising Creighton faculty, faculty from other institutions and other experts on Asian art, culture and politics, will discuss the topic: “Arts, Culture, and Tradition: Sharing Stories at Home and in Foreign Lands.”

Asian Culture Week is made possible by support from the University Non-Western Study Grant and sponsorship from the Creighton School of Law, University of Nanjing for the Arts and Nanjing University in China.
