Science and Religion Lecture examines dark matter and the origins of the universe

The Rev. Francis P. Xavier, SJ, PhDThe “Big Bang” theory of the universe’s origins has left no small number of questions for scholars of both science and religion to ponder.

Wednesday, April 24, at 7 p.m., in Room 188 of the Hixson-Lied Science Building on the Creighton University campus, the Rev. Francis P. Xavier, SJ, PhD, a visiting faculty member at Creighton and the vice provost for academics and research for Jesuit Worldwide Learning, will look into the mysteries of the universe’s origin for the annual Science and Religion Lecture.

About 4.5 percent of the mass of the universe is composed of visible matter and about 23 percent of the mass is so-called dark matter, meaning this mass is either invisible or virtual. That leaves some 72 percent of the universe’s materials unaccounted for as dark energy diffusely scattered in space. Fr. Xavier will discuss the nature of matter and anti-matter and peer deeper into the origin of dark matter and dark energy in an effort to better understand the reality of this missing matter.

Investigating these questions of origin and primary concern, Fr. Xavier examines science and religion in a demonstration of how science can help answer the “how” of life while religion can examine the “why.”

Drawing on examples of day-to-day phenomena and that which can sometimes not be entirely explained by scientific method, Fr. Xavier introduces other possibilities and means of understanding.

This lecture is free and open to the public. Room 188 in the Hixson-Lied Science Building is accessible by taking the elevator from the building’s atrium on the Ground Floor (G) to the first floor, turning right at the Mutual of Omaha Lounge and then turning right again into Room 188.
