Participants sought for physical therapy study on knee pain, music, and the biomechanics of running

If you’re a runner who experiences knee pain while going through your paces, your input could be helpful for a new study being undertaken by the Department of Physical Therapy in Creighton University’s School of Pharmacy and Health Professions.

And it may just be music to your ears.

Research volunteers between the ages of 12 and 35 are needed for the Creighton study that aims to determine the effects of listening to music on running biomechanics for runners with knee pain. The study is funded by a NASA Nebraska Space Grant.

The idea for the study was inspired by conversations between Creighton physical therapy professor, Terry Grindstaff, PhD, and student Danny McAndrew of the Class of 2020.

"Altering running cadence has been shown, in studies, to provide some relief, but is most often done using a metronom," Grindstaff said. "Since Danny has a background in running, he suggested we utilize music, which is more commonly used by runners for tempo running."

Ultimately, Grindstaff said, the research would better inform rehabilitation approaches for runners with knee pain.

Volunteers must run at least 10 miles per week and have at least a month of experiencing pain in the front of the knee when running, kneeling, squatting or sitting for prolonged periods. Those with other back or lower-body injuries in the past year, or who underwent lower-body surgery should not apply.

This study requires two visits with researchers, with two weeks intervening between visits. A stipend of $25 is available.
