Creighton Lied Art Gallery to host “Spirited Space: Figure and Form,” an exhibit of photographs by Professor Michael Flecky, SJ

Anasazi Cliff Dwelling in SouthwestThe Creighton University Lied Art Gallery will host an exhibition of photographs by the Rev. Michael Flecky, SJ, Oct. 26 – Nov. 24, with a gallery reception and talk on Friday, Nov. 1 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The photographs in the exhibit “Spirited Space: Figure and Form,” represent images from the Anasazi cliff dwellings of the Southwestern U.S., interior architecture of the St. Ignatius Chapel on the Seattle University campus, and figurative experiments with light in the photo studio. Images of material space, environmental design, and human presence attempt to provoke appreciation of the mystery of “spirited space” and form.

Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday the gallery is open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Visitor parking is located west of the Lied Education Center for the Arts on the corner of 24th and Cass streets.

“The notion of ‘spirit’ in this collection of photographs relates to the sense of presence I experienced while photographing in the environmental space of Anasazi cliff-dwellings in northern New Mexico as well as the Chapel of St. Ignatius Loyola at Seattle University,” Fr. Flecky says. “The notion of “figure” refers obviously to the study of the human figure backlit and rendered in black and white images from experiments with students in a photo lighting studio. The effect is reminiscent of the formal concepts of 20th century figurative artists Giacometti and Modigliani, two of my favorite sculptors.”

Fr. Flecky has taught fine art photography, criticism and photo history at Creighton University for nearly 40 years.

While teaching photography in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Creighton, he has received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and has also been Visiting Professor of Photography at Richmond College in London and Creighton’s semester abroad program in the Dominican Republic. His photographic research has taken him abroad to the U.K. and Ireland, Scandinavia, Italy and North Africa.
