Annual Symposium on Jewish Civilization looks at Jews and gender

Klutznick 2019“Jews and Gender: Tradition and Change,” is the theme of the 32nd annual Symposium on Jewish Civilization, Oct. 27 and 28. Sessions will take place on the campuses of Creighton University, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and the Omaha Jewish Community Center.

Gail S. Labovitz, PhD, will deliver the keynote address on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center Staenberg Kooper Fellman Campus located at 333 S. 132nd St.

Labovitz, a professor of Rabbinic Literature at American University will present, “Poskot in the Palace of Torah: A Preliminary Study of Orthodox Feminism and Halachic Process.” The lecture is free and open to the public.

Presenters come from as far away as Israel and as close as Omaha and there are ample opportunities for the public to interact with the scholars during the two days of presentations. Sunday’s events will be held from 9:00 to -11:30 a.m. in room 132D of the College of Public Affairs and Community Service at the University of Nebraska Omaha.

Monday the presentations will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Skutt Student Center Ballroom on the Creighton campus. All presentation are free and open to the public.

The Symposium is hosted by Creighton University’s Klutznick Chair in Jewish Civilization and the University’s Kripke Center for the Study of Religion and Society, along with the Harris Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the Schwalb Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the Jewish Federation of Omaha.
