Heider College of Business Announces New Scholarships in Partnership with the Suzanne & Walter Scott Foundation

Heider College of Business signCreighton University and the Suzanne & Walter Scott Foundation announced a $14.6 million scholarship program established for Heider College of Business students. The commitment re-creates and extends the Scott Scholars program, the most generous scholarship offered by the college.

The Scott Scholars program will recruit talented students to Creighton and develop them for careers in Omaha and Nebraska.Through the 9-year commitment, five students from Nebraska and 10 from outside the state each year will receive full tuition and room and board while studying at Heider College of Business. Signature Heider College of Business curriculum will underpin the students’ experiences.

Creighton President the Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, said the Foundation’s latest investment in the University will establish one of the nation’s most respected business education scholarships.

“Like Walter, I believe in this program and Heider College of Business’ ability to deliver on our goals. This complements Walter’s long service to and vision for the University and expresses his confidence in the impact we have on Omaha.”

Walter Scott Jr. served on the Creighton Board of Trustees from 1980 to 2001 and was named an emeritus trustee. Walter and Suzanne Scott also received the Manresa Medal from Creighton in 1998. Creighton's Manresa Medal is presented to those individuals who, like St. Ignatius of Loyola, demonstrate inspirational leadership while overcoming obstacles to enduring achievement.

“My intention for this gift is to empower Creighton to keep bringing new, young minds to the city and state. I trust them to do that,” he said.

Across the approximately last five years, 78 percent of Heider College of Business students arrived at Creighton from outside Nebraska. During that time, 53 percent of Heider College of Business alumni began full-time employment in Nebraska directly after graduation.

Matt McNary, a 2015 Heider College of Business graduate, is as an example of how a Suzanne & Walter Scott Foundation scholarship adds to Omaha’s brain gain. He came to Creighton from eastern Kansas, passing up two state schools’ full-ride scholarships. The Scott Scholars and Fellows program, under which he studied, is the reason he could choose Creighton.

At Creighton, McNary said he found a small community that complements Omaha’s larger community. An Omaha CPA, McNary is active in a host of nonprofit organizations. He’s aware of the difference Walter Scott, whom he met while at Creighton, makes on recruiting students and retaining Creighton alumni.

“Omaha feels like home,” McNary said. “I’ve invested my career here, and I don’t plan to leave. I love it here.”
