University celebrates and welcomes first-year students for hybrid orientation at Summer Preview

Summer Preview 2021Creighton University welcomed 97.5% of its incoming first-year students and their families during Summer Preview, the University’s annual orientation. The hybrid format across four June sessions allowed Creighton’s Division of Student Life to expand the reach and host one of the highest attended Summer Preview events in Creighton’s history.

“Last year, we learned we can utilize technology to reach more students,” said Justin Stoeckle, assistant director of transitions for the Division of Student Life. “We went into this year brainstorming how we could reach the largest number of students, and we incorporated some of the lessons we learned last year to create a hybrid format.”

The University streamed all in-person Summer Preview events to accommodate those who joined virtually.

Led by current Creighton students, the orientation supports a successful transition to Creighton in the fall through an introduction to campus resources, presentations on academic transition, campus tours, academic advising and registration. Campus activities also gave new students the opportunities to connect. “Magis,” which translates to “more than” in Latin, was the theme of Summer Preview 2021 to promote a welcoming community and space for students to embrace their true identities.

Magis is one of the Jesuit values Creighton embodies through its students, faculty and staff – it is a reminder to strive to be more and do more.

“We wanted undergrads coming to campus to see that we are more than students here, “Everything they are and that represents them is important,” said Madeline Elsasser, Summer Preview coordinator. “We encouraged students to embrace this perspective and celebrate the impact of our collective identity.”

Aside from the new theme and hybrid format, this year’s Summer Preview differed from past years. Stoeckle said one of the main initiatives was to meet the needs of students and families following a challenging year driven by COVID-19.

“We really wanted to connect students to faculty and staff to ensure this experience was impactful for them, regardless of attending virtually or in person. This past year, we have taken a very high-touch approach with our students and staff to make sure we’re exceeding their needs,” Stoeckle said.

More than 1,100 students registered to participate in one of four Summer Preview sessions. The fourth and final session will be held June 17-18.
