Brouillette to hold Waite Chair in Jesuit Education

André Brouillette, SJThe Rev. André Brouillette, SJ, associate professor of systematic and spiritual theology at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, is the next holder of Creighton University’s Anna and Donald Waite Endowed Chair in Jesuit Education for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Fr. Brouillette is a Jesuit priest from Quebec, Canada, and he previously taught philosophy and Church history in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Considered an expert on St. Teresa of Avila, he specializes in 16th and 17th century spirituality and history, as well as the systematic theological issues of pneumatology (the study of the Holy Spirit), soteriology (the study of salvation) and pilgrimage studies.

His first book, Le lieu du salut: Une pneumatologie d’incarnation chez Thérèse d’Ávila, published in 2014, will be released in English in July under the title, Teresa of Avila, the Holy Spirit, and the Place of Salvation. Fr. Brouillette authored another monograph on the theology of pilgrimage, The Pilgrim Paradigm: Faith in Motion, to be released in January 2022. He is currently working on an edited volume on pilgrimage and pedagogy for Fortress Press.

Fr. Brouillette holds graduate degrees in philosophy (University of Montréal), history (University of Toronto), theology (Weston Jesuit School of Theology, Boston College), a PhD in theology from Université Laval (Quebec City, Canada) along with an ecclesiastical doctorate from the Catholic University of Paris. His scholarly articles, essays and book chapters have been published in French, English and Spanish in Europe and North America, covering a wide range of issues.

He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the journal Teresianum (Rome), and of the Centre d’Études Marie-de-l’Incarnation (U. Laval, Canada), a member of the International Relations Committee of the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality, and of the Steering Committee of the Christian Spirituality Unit of the American Academy of Religion. In his home Jesuit province of Canada, Fr. Brouillette serves as a province consultor. In Boston, he accompanies especially the Communauté Catholique Francophone de Boston.

The Waite Chair in Jesuit Education was established in 2011 by Donald Waite, BSC’54, and his wife, Anna, to augment the Jesuit presence on the Creighton campus. The Waite Chair brings visiting Jesuits to Creighton to invigorate the Jesuit and Catholic intellectual tradition across the University, and is not restricted to a particular school or college. The visiting scholars who hold the chair — accomplished Jesuit priests from around the world — represent the full spectrum of academic disciplines.
