New Creighton Pre-Professional Scholars Program guides students toward professional career goals

Campus sunriseCreighton University recently launched its Creighton Pre-Professional Scholars Program (CPPSP), a comprehensive pre-professional advising and guarantee program for students seeking a rewarding career in Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy and Physical Therapy.

With more than 100 Creighton freshmen enrolled, the inaugural class has indicated an interest in pursuing one of these six professional study areas through opportunities and benefits that include networking events, mentorship, scholarships and workshops.

Professional education has traditionally been a high priority among Creighton students, with more than half of incoming freshman citing their interest in pre-professional programs offered at the University. Due to that well-known interest, Mary Chase, Ed.D., vice provost for Enrollment Management, said CPPSP is an opportunity for the university to further support students considering these career paths.

“This mission-focused program builds upon so much of what Creighton has already done with its students for years, because it extends beyond supplemental advising,” Chase said. “This model is unique and intentional as it helps students discern and experience their calling prior to pursuing a career.”

CPPSP, which provides a guaranteed interview for students meeting outlined criteria, is structured around comprehensive pre-professional advising offered by the Creighton EDGE, which offers support and additional services to students during their journey to a professional program.

Criteria for enrollment in the program varies between the six areas of study, but all fields emphasize volunteering, leadership and shadowing experiences prior to college, as well as a student’s academic success. “Those who applied for this program are not only focused on their four years at Creighton, they are future-focused on what happens beyond their undergraduate education,” Chase said.

“This commitment and their eagerness to embrace and live out the Jesuit mission, offer added value when our professional programs seek to admit students.”

The class of 2025 saw significant increases in students enrolled in many of the pre-professional programs available in the health sciences. Creighton, which is the largest Catholic health professions educator in the country, differentiates this program from others in the nation because of its breadth of program options, which extend to the recently opened four-year medical school at the Creighton University Health Sciences-Phoenix campus.

As the program continues, Chase said she hopes it will attract undergrad students to the university because of the advantages and supportive opportunities it presents on their journey to pursue a professional degree.

Applications for next year’s CPPSP class will be available beginning November 1. Students must submit an application for both undergraduate admission and a separate CPPSP application to be considered.
