SCSJ Weekly Service

Join the SCSJ for drop in service with a variety of community partners. Students can attend once or multiple times across the semester, but must sign up on eventbrite for each week they wish to attend. If a site is full, you are encouraged to sign up for the waitlist. We reflect as a community after each service experience. Transportation is provided and leaves from the SCSJ (Lower Becker Hall- west of Kiewit).

-Siena Francis House Thursdays 4:00-6:45pm Serve a meal and meet our neighbors at Siena Francis House, Nebraska’s largest provider of services to individuals experiencing homelessness. Creighton volunteers fill a variety of roles– serving a meal, practicing hospitality, and/or organizing items in the pantry.  Student will need to register on the SCSJ eventbrite as well as Siena Francis House’s volunteer portal. For the safety of Siena Francis House guests, volunteers must show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test before serving with this community partner.  We meet in the SCSJ and transportation is provided. -Cross Training Center Fridays 9:30am-12:30pm Join other Creighton students with a new community partner! Cross Training Center provides vocational training and job experience for low-income individuals, those experiencing homelessness, and other community members to create a pathway to find and retain employment. Creighton volunteers will learn about the electronics recycling program, work alongside CTC students, and help with various manual labor jobs.  We meet in the SCSJ and transportation is provided. -City Sprouts Fridays 12:45-3:30pm  Creighton volunteers will be serving at City Sprouts North- a community garden, education center and much more. Volunteers will be doing a variety of work- painting/creative projects, seed processing, work in the greenhouse, and the community garden. When the weather warms, we will prepare the garden for Spring. Interested participants must pre-sign up on eventbrite. We meet in the SCSJ and transportation is provided. Sign ups links below.

-Habitat ReStore Saturdays 10:00am-1:00pm  Join fellow students at Omaha’s Habitat for Humanity ReStore to process donations that will go directly towards building homes in the local community. 402 Service Program

Applications for Spring 2022 are now closed.

To be the first to get the application for Fall 2022, fill out our interest survey.

This committed group of students will have the opportunity to serve as mentors and/or homework tutors for students at local schools.  Transportation provided. Participants are expected to demonstrate commitment to building relationships and attend every week. Site options could change and new ones could still be added, but currently include:

-Completely KIDS: We are excited to partner with this local after school program to offer in person reading buddies and mentorship for elementary aged children on Wednesdays from 4:45-6:45 OR Thursdays from 4:15-6:15pm.

-Immigrants and Refugees with Omaha Public Schools: Participants will serve at one of two community partners with immigrant and refugee populations in Omaha Public Schools. We will learn about migration and the diverse populations that are part of our community, while engaging in direct service at Gifford Park Elementary’s after school program Mondays from 4:15-6:15pm, OR serving as a conversation partner with an adults learning English on Friday mornings 9-10:30am or 10:30am-12pm, with group reflection on Mondays from 5:30-6:15pm.  

TeamMates: Mentor an elementary aged student over your lunch break. Participants will meet with their mentee over the lunch break (any day of the week that works in your schedule) and will also join an evening reflection session with other Creighton TeamMates mentors to reflect on the experience together. TeamMates requires a two year commitment. This site accepts new volunteers during the Fall semester.

 

C.R.E.W. for Social Justice - Community. Reflection. Education. Weekly.

Participants in this six-week program commit to weekly formation, reflection, community building and learning together about criminal justice. Students will focus on the topic of criminal justice, learn and reflect together, and participate in service opportunities. Service includes working with our partner RISE to edit resumes and cover letters of builders (individuals who are incarcerated) as they prepare for re-entry. Anyone with an interest in learning about racial justice and criminal justice and reflecting together is welcome. This program will meet in person in the SCSJ! Participants must be available Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00pm
