Freeman-Asia Scholarships provide opportunities for students with financial need to study in East or Southeast Asia.

Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be enrolled in a college or university in the United States. (For a list of the most recent recipients of the Bridging Scholarship, scroll down to the bottom of this page.)
Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs). Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply.

Applicants for the Freeman-Asia scholarship must:
Eligible study abroad programs must be a minimum of 8 weeks for a summer term, 10 weeks for a quarter term, and 12 weeks for a semester term.
Freeman-ASIA Award benefits are determined by the eligibility of the program and the financial need of the grantee. The table below lists the Freeman-ASIA Award amounts for the following terms of study:

*Award amount may be adjusted should the recipient receives additional financial assistance not reported at time of application.
Please note: If program costs are less than the award amount (or covered by existing financial aid) recipients can use the Freeman-ASIA Award funds to cover related expenses such as airfare, living costs, books, etc.
The application for this scholarship is available online and includes: student form, details of study abroad program, endorsement by Study Abroad advisor, statement of financial need and statement from Financial Aid advisor, personal statement, summary of any previous experience in Asia, and service proposal.

The primary goal of Freeman-ASIA is to increase the number of American undergraduate students who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing them with the information and financial assistance they will need.
Freeman-ASIA Award recipients are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in Asia by others, and to spread greater understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home communities.
