HIS/INR 563: Foreign Relations of the United States Since 1945

Instructor: Dr. Elliot-Meisel

Just what are the driving forces behind United States foreign policy? Is it economics? Moral superiority? American exceptionalism? A combination of many different factors? Was the Cold War inevitable? Did the United States "lose" China and Vietnam? Was Korea vital to the security of the United States in 1950 and is its nuclear production a threat today? Why were Americans held hostage in Iran for 444 days and what was the Iran Contra affair? What direction should American foreign policy take in the post-Cold War period...or is the Cold War even over? In a course that combines lectures and discussions, explore and debate these issues and more as we analyze the motivations and interpretations of United States foreign policy.
